Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 31, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information the License to Sail app (the "App") and the website https://www.licensetosail.app (the "Site") collect, how it is used, and your choices. The App and Site are operated by Pearson Smith ("we," "us," or "our"), an individual developer.
1. The short version
- No account is required. We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or location.
- Your study progress stays on your device and in your own Apple iCloud account.
- Neptune AI uses only Apple Intelligence. We do not send your questions or activity to any outside AI company.
- We do not sell your personal information.
2. Information we do NOT collect
We do not collect your name, email, phone number, postal address, precise or approximate location, contacts, photos, or payment card details. There is no License to Sail account system.
3. Information the App stores
Study data you create
This includes subject progress, answers, study plans, test results, checklist progress, and settings. It is stored on your device and synced through Apple iCloud / CloudKit in your private iCloud database. We cannot see or access this data. Apple protects it under its own security practices, including end-to-end encryption where Apple offers it. You control iCloud syncing in your device settings. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
Purchases
All payments are handled by Apple through the App Store. We receive no payment card details from Apple. The App checks your subscription or purchase status with Apple, through RevenueCat, to unlock content. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user identifier and your purchase status. It does not receive your payment card details.
Question reports
The in-app report button opens an email to us. The message includes the question identifier, the question text, any illustration reference, the answer choices, and the correct answer. You can add a comment before you send it. Because the report is an email, we also receive the address you send it from. We use reports only to fix content. Please don't include other personal information in a report.
Support emails
If you email us, we receive your email address and message, and we use them only to respond.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, the App uses Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google) to deliver them. A device token is sent to Google for that purpose.
4. Question content (Supabase)
The question bank and related study content are hosted with Supabase, a cloud database provider. The App downloads read-only question content from Supabase. No personal data is sent to Supabase. Like any internet service, Supabase may briefly process technical data such as an IP address to deliver content, under its own security practices.
5. Neptune AI (Apple Intelligence)
Neptune AI explanations are generated only with Apple Intelligence, which runs on your device or on Apple's Private Cloud Compute. According to Apple, data sent to Private Cloud Compute is used only to fulfill the request and is not stored or made accessible to Apple. We do not receive your Neptune AI prompts or responses, and we do not use any third-party AI provider.
6. Analytics
We do not use third-party analytics in the App to track you, except as described in Section 7. Apple may provide us with aggregated, de-identified App Store and app usage statistics (for example, downloads and crash reports) for users who have chosen to share them with developers. We cannot identify you from this information.
7. Advertising and Meta
We advertise the App on Facebook and Instagram (Meta). Viewing or clicking those ads is governed by Meta's privacy policy.
Meta SDK
The App includes the Meta (Facebook) SDK (Facebook App ID 1241292174210431) to measure how well our ads work. The SDK may send Meta app events, such as app install, app launch, and in-app purchase or trial start, along with device information like device model, OS version, app version, and IP address. Meta uses this to attribute installs and purchases to our ads and to report ad performance to us.
IDFA and App Tracking Transparency
The App accesses your device's Advertising Identifier (IDFA) only if you allow it when iOS shows the App Tracking Transparency prompt. If you choose "Ask App Not to Track," the IDFA is not accessed and Meta receives limited data under Apple's privacy rules.
Opting out
You can change your choice at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. You can also manage ad preferences in your Facebook or Instagram settings. We do not sell your personal information, but sharing app events with Meta for advertising may count as "sharing" or "targeted advertising" under some U.S. state laws. You may opt out as described here or by emailing us.
8. How we use information
We use the limited information described above only to run the App, unlock purchased content, deliver notifications you allow, fix question errors, respond to support requests, and measure our advertising. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it except with the service providers named in this policy (Apple, Supabase, RevenueCat, Google for notifications, and Meta) or when required by law.
9. Children
The App is designed for adult mariners and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Your rights
Everyone
Your study data is under your control. In the App's settings you can reset your study plan and reset question stats. On the profile screen you can delete all profiles and question data. You can also delete the App, and remove its iCloud data in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Storage.
California and other U.S. states
Depending on where you live (for example California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, and other states with privacy laws), you may have the right to know what personal information we have, to access it, correct it, or delete it, and to opt out of sale, sharing, or targeted advertising. We do not sell personal information. We will not treat you differently for using your rights.
EU/UK (GDPR)
Where GDPR applies, we process the small amount of data described here on these bases: to provide the App you requested (contract), for our legitimate interests in fixing content and answering support requests, and with your consent for tracking (via App Tracking Transparency). You may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing, to data portability, to withdraw consent, and to complain to your local data protection authority.
To make a request, email licensetosail@agentmail.to. Because we hold almost no data that identifies you, we may need to ask for details to find any record.
11. Data retention and deletion
Study data stays on your device and in your iCloud account until you delete it. Support emails and question reports are kept only as long as needed to respond or fix content. Data held by Apple, Google, RevenueCat, or Meta is governed by their policies.
12. Security
We rely on Apple's iCloud/CloudKit security for your study data, and we use reasonable measures to protect anything we receive. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
13. International users
We are based in the United States. Information we receive may be processed in the United States and in other places where our service providers operate.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. We will post the new version on this page and change the effective date. For material changes, we will also give notice in the App or on the Site where reasonable.
